Never Too Old to Exercise
We all know the benefits of a healthy lifestyle but keeping it up, or even starting later in life, has been proved to be beneficial not just for a healthy body but for a sharp mind too. Research conducted suggest that doing moderate exercise several times a week is the best way to keep your mind sharp if you are over 50.
A lot of people in their 50’s or 60’s shy away of exercise thinking they need to go for a run or weight training, however there is a lot of different exercises beneficial to the more mature bodies, for example Pilates, Thai Chi or just walking.
The research proves that thinking and memory skills were most improved with those who exercise on a regular basis. It has long been known that physical activity can reduce a number of diseases like type 2 diabetes for example. Other benefits of exercise is better mental health with decreasing in depression and dementia.
With regular exercise the brain receives a greater supply of blood and oxygen that boost its health, as well as a growth hormone that helps the formation of new neurons and connections.
Studies show that in a variety of brain tests, aerobic (even cycling or walking) exercise improved cognitive abilities and weight training had a significant effect on memory and the planning abilities (also called executive functions)
